He specialized in diagnostic radiology at the 401 General Military Hospital of Athens and at the Aretaieio Hospital of the University of Athens (Department of Radiology — Chair of Radiology) from 1985 to 1989. During his fellowship he took part in all of the department's clinical and research activities relating to Female Imaging.
His interest centered primarily on the diagnosis of breast cancer through screening programs, as well as through the use of modern diagnostic techniques. Upon his return to Greece in 1993, Spyros Lazarou worked in the Mammography Department of the Aretaieio Hospital and took part in establishing the Breast Imaging Department of the Breast Clinic at the 401 General Military Hospital of Athens, where he remained until 2003.
